More False Reports of 300 or 400 Million Year Old “Russian Screws”

More False Reports of 300 or 400 Million Year Old “Russian Screws”

More claims of ancient million year-old Russian fossil
screws have appeared on the Internet. For example,
ther is the August 13, 2012 “300 Million Year Old Screw
Found! Who Built It?,” Disclose TV article at
http://www.disclose.tv/news/300_million_years_old_Screw_found_Who_built_it/85766

and the January 24, 2013, the "Russian Screw Fossil,"
Disclose TV article at
http://www.disclose.tv/action/viewphoto/122391/Russian_screw_fossil/

In addition, the picture of the alleged fossil screw that
appeared in the August 13, 2012 Disclose TV article also
appeared with other so-called “screws” in the September
2012 Brazil Weird News web Site in "New Informations
and Photos of the Machine Dated in 400 Million Years" at
http://brazilweirdnews.blogspot.com/2012/09/new-informations-and-photos-of-machine.html

Contrary to the undocumented and unsubstantiated
protestation made in the January 24, 2013 article that
these “screws” cannot be crinoid stems, these objects are
quite clearly fossil crinoid stems. They are classic examples
of combination external molds and steinkerns of fossil
crinoid columnals. In case of the so-called fossil “screws”
illustrated in the Disclose TV articles and of the
“Mysterious Artifacts” at http://fototelegraf.ru/?p=42872 ,
the ribbed external mold of a crinoid columnal and the
steinkern formed by the fill of its central canal can be
seen clearly seen.

In case of the fossil crinoids illustrated on the “Mysterious
Artifacts” web site, a sequence of events can postulated.
First, disarticulated crinoid columnals were buried on the
sea floor in what likely were carbonate sediments. Then,
after burial, these sediments were replaced by chert. The
crinoid columnal, being composed of single crystals of
calcite, were resistant to silicification and were not
replaced by chert. Later, the nodules or layers of chert were
weathered and eroded. Because of the weathering, the
crinoid columnals, being composed of calcite, were
selectively dissolved leaving empty molds in the chert
that illustrated in the pictures on the “Mysterious Artifacts”
web page. Similar molds and steinkerns can form when
crinoidal limestones are dolomitized and the undolomitized
crinoidal columnals are later selectively removed by either
weathering or formation waters.

some example of these fossils can be seen in:

1. Fossil, Falls of the Ohio State Park, DNR State Parks and Reservoirs
http://cdm16066.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p181901coll35/id/199/rec/1

5. Crinoid Stem - Photo Archive of fossils found at Weston-Super-Mare
http://www.westonsuper.ukfossils.co.uk/LIVE/west8.jpg
http://www.westonsuper.ukfossils.co.uk/Weston-Fossils-Geology/fossil-photos.htm

The Discovery TV and related reports are also problematical
because none of the people and research mentioned in them
cannot be verified as being real.

False reports about 400 million year-old “machines” have
also appeared previously on the internet. A couple of posts
discussing one such report are:

1. Machine dated at 400 million years found in Russia,
Brazil Weird News, March 8, 2012,
http://brazilweirdnews.blogspot.com/2012/03/machine-dated-at-400-million-years.html

and 2. Misterioso Fossile in Russia: Astronave Antica?
Blog di informiamo l'AlterBlog, March 6, 2012,
http://informiamo.altervista.org/blog/misterioso-fossile-in-russia-astronave-antica/

In the source material from which these articles used,
someone appears to have been either indulging in
practical jokes or testing the gullibility of Internet bloggers
as the picture of this alleged “fossil machine” from Russia
comes directly from a Wikimedia file
“File:FossileLaudonomphalus regularisP1.jpg” at:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FossileLaudonomphalus_regularisP1.jpg

Another picture of this specimen is found at
“File:FossileLaudonomphalus regularis.jpg” at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FossileLaudonomphalus_regularis.jpg

In both web pages, the specimen claimed to be a 400 million
year-old “machine” from Russia is clearly labeled as the crinoid
“Laudonomphalus regularis” from the Givetian, Devonian of
northern France. This specific specimen is indicated as in
the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Lille, France.

This is noted in the article “400 Million Year Old Machine
Found in Russia” in The truth Behind the Scenes
http://www.thetruthbehindthescenes.org/2012/03/09/400-million-year-old-machine-found-in-russia/

Obviously, someone noticed how much these crinoid fossils
looked like gears and decided to have some fun by claiming
they is a 400 million year-old machine.

Paul H.

Pennsylvania Geologic Survey

Pennsylvania Geologic Survey

The following letter about a giveaway of Pennsylvania
Geologic Survey publications has been circulating among
rock and mineral societies in Pennsylvania and posted
to the Fossil Forum at:
http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/37321-free-pennsylvania-geologic-survey-material-via-pdf-giveaway/

Noticed the May 20th – 24th deadline for picking up
hard copies of the free Pennsylvania Geologic Survey
publications from the giveaway.

++++ start of posted letter ++++

Good day,

Sales of all PA Geological Survey publication, except for SP 1,
The Geology of Pennsylvania, ceased at the end of April. With
a few exceptions, all publications of the Fourth Geological
Survey, including those that have long been out of print,
have been scanned and are available for downloaded from
our website at:
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/topogeo/publications/pgspub/index.htm

Before we recycle the remaining stock of printed publications,
we will offer them free to the public during the week of
May 20, 2013. If you are interested in acquiring any of these
publications you can visit our office during the week. Also
included in this give away will be a random selection of
publications (ours, USGS, and others) that have accumulated
throughout the building especially in our library. Most of
these are used publications, many of which have been
returned to us from other libraries.

Be aware that we have no list of what publications are
available but the selection of our sales publications includes
a few Atlases and Progress Reports plus a wider selection
of Water and Mineral Resource reports. Also available are
significant quantities of two (1:500,000) poster-sized maps -
Map 65 the digital shaded-relief map and Map 67, the
geologic shaded-relief map. The PA Geological Survey will
continue to give away most of its free publications such as the
educational series and various page-sized maps. For that
reason, those publications will not be a part of this giveaway.

The giveaway will be conducted out of the core library in the
basement of our building in Middletown. Directions to our
office can be found at:
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/topogeo/about/index.aspx

Reservations are not required; however, to make sure we have
staff adequate to assist everyone; we would appreciate it if you
would contact Jody Smale, our librarian, jsmale@pa.gov) and let
her know generally when you expect to stop in. All scavenging
and hauling must be done in person, during that week. We will
not package, ship, or store publications for you.

We are conducting this event to give our fans one last opportunity
to obtain our classic publications in their original form. This event
is not for book dealers or anyone else who hopes to make a buck
at the expense of the taxpayers of Pennsylvania.

From

Michael E. Moore P.G. | Geologist Manager
PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey

I am stunned.
>From the Vernadsky State Geological Museum,
Russian Academy of Sciences!!
The "shatter-cones" appear to be aragonite crystals.
The samples are all m-wrongs.
This paper would never pass the peer-review of Club-Space-Rock,
how did it get past the Cornell University Library?
http://arxiv.org/help/endorsement
How did this ever get published?"

If a person looks at the endorsemen web page at
http://arxiv.org/help/endorsement , it specifically
states:

"The endorsement process is not peer review."

Thus, the articles posted to arXiv are not peer-reviewed.

Over the years, I have noticed that the arXiv endorsement
system, although it allows "publication" of articles at a much
lower cost than conventional peer-reviewed journals, also
allows some rather questionable material to at times to be
"published" on arXiv. This material includes catastrophist
pseudoscience such as "Tails of a Recent Comet" by Milton
Zysman and Frank Wallace at http://arxiv.org/abs/1004.0416
and long discredited and scientifically illiterate nonsense
about a "pole shift" causing the end of the last glacial as in
"On the change of latitude of Arctic East Siberia at the end
of the Pleistocene" by W. Woelfli and W. Baltensperger at
http://arxiv.org/abs/0704.2489?context=physics.geo-ph

A person has to take a critical look at what appears on
arxiv.org and not accept it at face value. It appears the
arXiv Blog simply repeats what the article is about
without making a critical examination of the article's
content. It is largely an Internet version of a press
release and should be viewed with the same skepticism
and critical eye as any press release.

Comments about another arXiv reprint can be found
