 Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis and Missoula (Spokane) Megafloods

There is a new paper containing research about the
Missoula (Spokane) megafloods that contain bad news
for those few proponents of the Younger Dryas impact
hypothesis, who argue that these megafloods were
a single megaflood and caused by a hypothetical Younger
Dryas Impact.

It is:

Balbas, A.M., Barth, A.M., Clark, P.U., Clark, J., Caffee,
M., O’Connor, J., Baker, V.R., Konrad, K. and Bjornstad,
B., 2017. 10Be dating of late Pleistocene megafloods
and Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreat in the northwestern
United States. Geology, 45(7), pp.583-586

This paper contains cosmogenic 10Be ages that directly
date flood and glacial features important to understanding
the flood history, the evolution of the Channeled Scabland,
and relationships to the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Popular
authors of lay books for the general public, lecturers, and
podcasters, e.g. Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson cannot
dismiss these dates as they did any radiocarbon dates that
contradicted their beliefs as being older wood / bone
reworked from older sediments.

The last of the larger megafloods occurred at 18.2 ± 1.5 ka. It
flowed down the northwestern Columbia River valley prior to
blockage of this route by advance of the Okanogan ice lobe
of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. The largest of multiple megafloods
predates the alleged Younger Dryas impact event by thousands
of years.

These dates show that the last of the megafloods from
glacial Lake Missoula occurred at about 14.7 ± 1.2 ka. The
youngest of the dated megaflood(s) (14.0 ± 1.4 ka to
14.4 ± 1.3 ka) likely came from glacial Lake Columbia,
indicating that the lake persisted for a few centuries after
the last Missoula megaflood. The last of the megafloods
predate the alleged Younger Dryas impact event by
thousands of years and came from two different sources.
The multiple megafloods that all are older than the
start of the Younger Dryas and, as a result, cannot be
associated with a hypothetical Younger Dryas event
as a few self-taught avocational investigators argue.

That there were multiple the Missoula (Spokane) megafloods
that predated a hypothetical Younger Dryas Impact is a
long standing idea based on solid evidence is shown by an
older and related Friends of the Pleistocene field trip
guidebook. It is:

Contrary to what Mr. Hancock seems to believe, neocatastrophism has become popular among

One item that Jason Calavito did not mention in his commentaries, is that Mr. Hancock does not appreciate the significance of recent research about the chronology of the Missoula (Spokane) Floods and older “Ancient Cataclysmic Floods.” The identification of numerous Missoula Floods has nothing to do with any imaginary conspiracy by an equally imaginary cabal of nameless “gradualists.” Rather the recognition is based upon multiple, unconformity-bounded sets of flood deposits. These flood deposits are separated subaerial exposure surfaces in which paleosols, including some very well-developed calcretes, and terrestrial animals burrows have developed. There also are separate sets of clastic dikes truncated at different unconformities. Some of different sets of flood deposits have been
dated using, where possible, by radiocarbon dating magnetostratigraphy, optically stimulated luminescence dating, and tephrachronology. The oldest of these deposits predate 1.77 million years ago. There exists an abundance of published evidence that demonstrates the occurrence of innumerable Missoula-like megafloods over a period greater than 1.77 million years.

Also, Mr. Hancock overlooks Antonio Zamora ‘s badly flawed optically stimulated luminescence arguments that ignores the context of these dates and collaborating pollen records from the fills of the Carolina Bays.

Finally, Mr. Hancock is seemingly unaware of the lack of any credible evidence supporting the existence of Michael Davias’ seemingly imaginary Saginaw Bay impact structure that is used to explain the Carolina Bays. The geology that region is well known enough to show that there is a complete lack of the deformation of bedrock and overlying Quaternary deposits that such an impact would have caused. Also, any geophysical signature ot such as impact structure is lacking. Finally, regional
sedimentary and paleoenvironmental archives for that time period lack and are undisturbed by the ejecta deposits that such an impact would have created. The Saginaw Bay impact structure is just one of a few likely imaginary Pleistocene impact craters that have been reported in the Great lakes region.

Interesting Paper About Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis

There is a new and interesting paper about the Younger
Dryas Impact Hypothesis. It is:

This paperconcludes that convincing evidence for this hypothesis
remains debatable and that some of the evidence used to support
the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis either cannot fully be
explained or is contradictory. This paper also concludes that
there is an apparent age discrepancy of up to two centuries
between different sites associated with the proposed impact
event and offers alternative interpretations of it.

Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis Supported by Graham Hancock

Graham Hancock, a well known alternative "prehistorian" and
best-selling popular book author has apparently Become a supporter
of the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis. In his upcoming book, which
is currently described as a revision of his 1995 book, "Fingerprints of
the Gods,” Mr. Hancock will apparently argue for Younger Dryas
Impact having created a "titanic global cataclysm" that destroyed a
lost civilization that he believes existed during the Late Pleistocene.
According to published accounts, he will apparently use Gobekli Tepi
as evidence of the existence of this lost Ice Age civilization.

thousand-year deep-freeze right at the end of the Ice Age
that geologists call the Younger Dryas."

"…supports the thesis of a great civilisation, lost to history
between 13,000 and 12,000 years ago, that I controversially

Initially, in Fingerprints of the Gods, Mr. Hancock argued that his lost
Ice Age civilization was destroyed by Earth Crustal Displacement.
In "Underworld: Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age", he abandoned Earth
Crustal Displacement and argued that his lost Ice Age civilization was
destroyed by rapid global sea level rise that started at the end of the
last Ice Age and continued into Early Holocene. Now it appears that
his terminal Pleistocene cataclysm has shifted again from terminal
Pleistocene – Early Holocene global sea level rise to the hypothesized
Younger Dryas impact.

"The results of our study clearly falsify the predictions of
the extraterrestrial impact hypothesis. Both the finding that

well as spatial and temporal overlap of Clovis and Folsom
in the north run counter to the predictions of the extraterrestrial
