This talk states:

"Several impact structures have been recently discovered in pre-Tertiary
Peninsular Malaysia. In the Langkawi islands three of four arcuate
ridges are associated with cleaved quartz that crops out as a sill and dyke
complex. Other shock-metamorphic features include ribbon quartz and
mosaicism. The two major craters, named Mahsuri Rings, partially overlap and
each is about 2.4 km across. In 280o - 100o direction their centres are 600
metres apart."

"Another proven impact structure is the Paloh Ring that straddles the state
boundary between Terengganu and Pahang. The proof consists of planar
deformation features (PDFs) and mosaicism in vein quartz intruded into
undivided Carboniferous metasedimentary strata that compose the lower
eastern slope of the 623m high Paloh peak."

In part the article stated:

"Penang, Malaysia 29 January – In a press conference this morning, The Centre for Archaeological Research Malaysia (CARM) announced evidence of human existence in Malaysia from approximately 1.83 million years ago."

Also, it stated:

"The advance study at Bukit Bunuh of Lenggong in the state of Perak,
Malaysia was conducted in 2008. This new evidence consists of stone
tools artefacts such as hand axe and flake tools. Those artefacts were
found cemented in a rock called suevite, a type of rock formed by
the impact of meteorite. The rock has been dated using a fission track
dating method in Geochronology Lab in Japan, Tokyo, and discloses
a date of approximately 1.83 ± 0.61 million years old."

and it stated:

"Handaxe that was made out of suevite has also been discovered.
Meteorite impact had caused the native stone to melt and formed a
new stone called suevite. This impact has been substantiated by the
presence of suevite, crossed- lamellar microstructure on quartz,
physical anomaly evidence and geomorphology evidence of an
impact crater. The distribution of suevite is approximately 3-4 km2"

Does anyone know about the this alleged meteorite impact crater?

The Journal of Geology has just published a new paper on Permian
extinctions. It is:

Igneous Intrusion of Coal during Late Permian Extinction Events

"Abstract

Unusually large and locally variable carbon isotope excursions
coincident with mass extinctions at the end of the Permian
Period (253 Ma) and Guadalupian Epoch (260 Ma) can be attributed
to methane outbursts to the atmosphere. Methane has isotopic
values (δ13C) low enough to reduce to feasible amounts the
carbon required for isotopic mass balance. The duration of the
carbon isotopic excursions and inferred methane releases are here
constrained to <10,000 yr by counting annual varves in lake
deposits and by estimating peat accumulation rates. On
paleogeographic maps, the most marked carbon isotope excursions
form linear arrays back to plausible methane sources: end-Permian
Siberian Traps and Longwood-Bluff intrusions of New Zealand and
end-Guadalupian Emeishan Traps of China. Intrusion of coal
seams by feeder dikes to flood basalts could create successive
thermogenic methane outbursts of the observed timing and
magnitude, but these are unreasonably short times for
replenishment of marine or permafrost sources of methane.
Methane released by fracturing and heating of coal during
intrusion of large igneous provinces may have been a planetary
hazard comparable with bolide impact"

Y. Y. Podladchikov, and B. Jamtveit, in press, Siberian gas
venting and the end-Permian environmental crisis. Earth and
Planetary Science Letters.

They concluded that that heating of Tunguska Basin sediments by
the ascending magma of the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province
was capable of playing a key role in end-Permian environmental
crisis. They argue that the cooking of organic-rich shales and
petroleum-bearing evaporites around sill intrusions produced
sufficient volumes of greenhouse gases and halocarbons to cause
warming and atmospheric ozone depletion on a global scale. They
estimated that the metamorphism of organic matter and petroleum
generated over 100,000 Gigatons of CO2 that were released through
enormous pipe structures associated with kilometre-sized craters.
They also argue from laboratory experiments that cooking of
petroleum-bearing rock salt at high temperatures by the magmas
generated huge quantities of methyl chloride and methyl bromide
that have resulted not only in global warming but also global ozone
depletion.
